We are excited to announce the revival of Château de Suronde, the iconic and magical estate in the Loire Valley. This historic estate produces dry and sweet wines from 7 hectares of vineyard of 15-70 year old vines, 100% Chenin Blanc. Of those, 5.5 hectares are Quarts de Chaume Appellation, the only Grand Cru in Loire Valley.
The estate has been acquired in 2016 by Kathleen Van den Berghe and Sigurd Mareels, the Belgian owners of Château de Minière in AOP Bourgueil. Château de Minière makes red and rose still AOP Bourgueil wines, as well as red and rose sparkling wines. Minière produces highly unique and delicious wines and grape juice, all from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes.
Château de Suronde is the perfect complement to Château de Minière, with white wines from Chenin Blanc that can be sweet, semi-sweet and dry, both still and sparkling.
Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc are the two iconic Loire Valley grape varieties, each on their “ideal” terroir, Bourgueil on limestone and Quarts de Chaume on schist.
Château de Suronde will produce mainly dry white wine, and will produce the iconic sweet Quarts de Chaume wines in the best vintages only.
Sweet Loire wines from Chenin Blanc have a remarkable acidity to balance the natural sweetness, resulting in very balanced wines that pair wonderfully well with a wide range of foods, and allowing the wines to age for several decades.
Both Château de Minière and Château de Suronde are magical estates in the middle of each vineyard, surrounded by nature and shaped by the Loire and the Layon rivers. Both properties breathe history and the vineyards are quintessential terroir locations.
Château de Suronde will propose “a magical wine experience”. It will be a place of creation. Besides the grapes and the wine, we will also produce our own biodynamic plants for use in the vineyard, and other biodynamic produce. Château de Suronde will also be a creative place for artists, offering a residence to visual artists, writers and musicians.
Belgian artists will be selected by the renowned Belgian curator Sven Vanderstichelen for artist residences in Château de Suronde. Each year an artwork created at Suronde will be selected to feature on the new vintage labels.

The first wine from Château de Suronde is a dry white wine made in protective fashion and bottled quickly to preserve freshness and aromatics and allow for 1 year of bottle ageing to increase complexity and body.
The wine has been made entirely from ripe healthy grapes. All noble rot grapes have been sorted out at harvest. The juice has been pressed gently and protectively, and the wine has fermented in small temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
